When they used to burn witches at the stake, what made them

I thought maybe inhaling all the "hot air" might render the alveoli inoperable and so suffocation might be the killer...or perhaps the pain and stress is so traumatic it causes heart failure...really, theories?

Asphyxiation maybe. Lots of pain along the way. Singed eyebrows.

Can't be a lot of oxygen atop a burning pile of wood, although it kinda depends on whether an accelerant is used like oil or pitch. The burning itself, system goes into shock, heart failure perhaps? Did they do a lot of burning? I was always under the impression that they liked to drown witches, or hang them.

They still burn them in parts of Africa. Some vids on the web. Slightly gruesome. Best to see what kills them yourself. Being poked with a stick to keep them in the fire doesn't help.

It depends on the size of the fire.

Large fires will produce a high concentration of carbon monoxide, rendering the victims unconscious before the more grisly things start to happen.

With smaller fires it's going to be the actual burning that kills, and it's going to be excruciatingly painful.
