Learning Zulu

#1  Postby The_Metatron » Apr 30, 2023 8:48 pm

The Metatrix has been learning Spanish for some 600 days using Duolingo. Primus is using it to practice his French, and Tertius is learning Spanish.

I thought I’d learn Zulu, instead.

We bought the family plan for Duolingo, so we all get to use it. I’ve had the app loaded on my iPad for a very long time, but never used it. I had a hell of a time getting it to work at first. Apparently, the app update process must have glitched since I installed it, because I had to delete and re-app to get it to function. Once operating, it’s pretty easy to use.

I’m only five days into it. And, it’s very pleasing to take a few minutes here and there to learn a totally new thing.

Except, some nouns seem not so new. Ipizza is pizza. Ipasta is pasta. Guess what ikhafi is.

I wonder when I’ll ever get to use it. I might have to retire to South Africa.

I learned a bit of Xhosa, mostly to be able to sing along with Xhosa songs. Its like a built-in beatbox.

I’ve been skimming Zulu history a bit today. Lots of violence.

I am concluding that tribalism doesn’t work so well. Anywhere.

Tribalism would work fine... if it wasn't for all those other dirty, evil tribes!

They (DuoLingo) sure seem to be spending a lot of time reviewing early words and lessons. I grab a few minutes here and there, as I find some time on the internets.

It would be exciting to meet someone who speaks it.
