If you've not gotten to the sub-shells yet, then yeah, it's going to look very confusing. The sub-shells, themselves, take some getting used to, but once you've got a handle on them it'll explain a lot of what you're currently struggling with. Sub-shells are the bit of chemistry where you get to start using the word "quantum" without selling snakeoil. Enjoy that.
