I thought most of the relevant scientists were thinking more along the lines of life starting around something like those Deep Sea Hydrothermal Vents, the black and white smokers at the mid-ocean ridges? There's a ton of energy available and no UV to worry about.
A somewhat related question, is it generally thought that there is more biomass in rock than on the surface and in oceans? It's been found pretty deep, like over a kilometer, maybe over 2-3 Km, and everywhere, if I remember correctly.
