Before calculators, British kids were taught 22/7 as the value of pi to use in calculations. It's a better approximation than 3.14, but he therefore meant 22nd July.
It's also the sensible British way to format the date, but as you can see, I still haven't managed to master the numbering.


Oh, it's easy. The months are named according to their latin prefixes. E.g. September = 7th month. December = 10th month.
