Many, many years ago when I was 17, I represented Australia in an international high-school maths competition. Terry Tao was the reserve for our team in case one of us got sick and couldn't go. He was good enough, but not yet 10 years old, and the organisers felt he'd have plenty more opportunities to show his skills as he got older (he did!).

On the other hand, matrix algebra was the subject that just about made me chuck maths in at uni - I've never had a feel for it at all.
