I think the real horror of the story is that Abraham believes this is a god who would tell him to murder his child and he's still going to do it based on the assumption that "If God says it's right, then it's right", the very epitome of the Fundamentalist religious abdication of any real morality or attempt at moral thought.

The fact that "God" was just "funnin'" with him is beside the point. Abraham was willing to worship a god he thought really meant for him to do it. "God" was willing to put Abraham through such torture and, being omnipotent, already knew what Abraham would do. "God" didn't need the test. Abraham didn't need the test.

I guess I should have put "Abraham" in quotes too as he was no more real than "God".
