Yes, indeed it remains in contradiction with the supposed qualities of god. The problem of evil (POE) is typically based on the apparent contradiction that the existence of evil is incompatible and contradictory to the commonly given attributes of God: omnipotence ,omniscience, omnibenevolence. What you quoted is an apologist's facile end-run around the POE by ruling out the existence of evil. The obvious retort is that "absence of good" is contradictory to the omnipresence and/or omnibenevolence of God.
It's as if you're accused of lying and your defense is "it wasn't a lie, it was just an absence of truth".
