Not sure if you're question was directed at me, and I honestly have no idea if the infant could have gotten it this way, but the Medical Examiner's report (according to the article) stated:

disseminated herpes simplex virus Type 1, complicating ritual circumcision with oral suction.


I can only assume the ME actually investigated the cause and came to the conclusion that it was indeed the oral suction.

Sorry about that, my question was for anyone to answer. :) I know the cause of transmission in this case, but I'm still interested about living babies.
I thought that a parent of a newborn might be interested too.
I assumed that someone reading this thread must know more about cold sores than me. :shifty:
