'1st degree murder' err don't think there is such a concept in the UK, the only two types of killing bar negligience is deliberately killing someone and killing someone when you only mean to hurt them (to a relatively low level, ie punching them a single time and they fall over and hit the pavement etc' which is manslaughter.

Yes I meant the UK term "murder" rather than "1st degree murder" (must have picked that up from films!). To clarify what I said above - the sentence for murder in the UK is life imprisonment with a tariff set on how many years they spend in prison before they can be considered for parole. The minimum tariff a judge can recommend seems to be 15 years at the moment (for age 18 or older).
