When will the US be grown-up enough to elect an atheist president?

Well I don't see Barack Obama as being an atheist. Maybe not a right wing evangelical Christian, but I do see him being a Christian in personal beliefs nonetheless.

The better question is not whether the US is grown up enough to elect an atheist president, but when will the US be grown up enough not to give credence to religious belief as a deciding factor for the candidacy. I mean I would rather have a competent president whom is an evangelical Christian, than an incompetent one whom is a neo-atheist, and vice verse. (whoops didn't finish thought).

Being an atheist doesn't mean you are a better candidate. Just as being a Christian doesn't make you a better candidate. Being a better candidate via policies and positions on executive issues makes you a better candidate, not personal religious values. I have great respect for men and women who are strong Christians in their personal life, but yet in the government remain secular and unbiased towards all religions.
