The frightening part is that these are median figures implying that in many places the amount of training is even less than this. I've advocated in the past for better training for US police officers as just one factor that could help reduce the number of police shootings.

The article unfortunately does not give the "total" amount of training but for comparison, RCMP cadet training in Canada is 24 weeks or nearly 1000 hours followed by 6 months of field coaching. Many provincial police services have even longer training periods. Firearms training generally amounts to more than 4 weeks and mediation/conflict resolution receive a hell of a lot more than 8 hours.
