With the benefit of hindsight, May was always going to win. Had Gove not stood and thrown his full weight behind Johnson instead, the best possible outcome for the latter would have been to find himself in the same situation that Leadsom did. I.e. being pressured into standing down for the good of the party before it came to a members vote.

Of course, if Johnson had actually had a plan for leaving the EU that couldn't be written down on the back of a postage stamp, he might have posed a more credible challenge. But it's not as if anyone else has managed to crack that particular conundrum yet.
