I think a major issue is that the far-right is a fringe group in most European countries with a more socialist leaning people.
On the other hand, in the US the far-right seems to have become quite prominent and influential, making it harder for Europeans to distinguish moderate right leaning Americans from far-right Americans.

Also middle ground isn't necessarily the best or most rational option.
