Bear in mind that a lot of the people killed by "freedom fighters" were innocent bystanders, victims of such actions as car bombs planted in public places. Since there is no great difficulty in identifying a specific target and acting accordingly, I find I am unable to understand how people who can do such things are not only forgiven, but glorified afterwards.

There's a difference between forgiving someone and recognizing a persistent human tendency to exclude. The belief that we can overcome this has been promoted by both religious and secular sources, but religious people are not the only ones to chase after pie in the sky. I don't care whether you want to save the human race because god commands it or because humanism demands it. You both want to save the human race. All well and good, but there's a mismatch in the carrot and stick approaches. The carrot feels nicer, but is ineffective. You have to believe in it. Your best bet is not to give a fuck. That doesn't mean you approve of racist massacres; it just means you don't think there's much to be done.
