I've been watching the development of the Tesla powerwall with interest. The biggest problem with going completely off-grid here is air conditioning, it would take a massive battery farm to keep the A/Cs going overnight, or through a couple of days of rain. I remember theropod posted a very detailed thread about off-grid living some time ago, he's been self-sufficient for a decade. IIRC there was a lot of maintenance to do on a regular basis.
