There's a lot to be discussed about that idea, too. Where I live, the huge majority of vehicles on the road are light trucks and SUVs. A small handful of days a year, it may snow enough to make passage difficult for a typical passenger car. I dodge the resulting traffic every day.
A small fraction of the above vehicles actually see the use for which they were designed. I can tell by the undercarriages and truck beds. A truck used as a truck never looks like one that is used like a passenger car.
What would be better is if it were easier to simply rent such a vehicle when you needed one.
I used to buy pickup trucks so when I changed stations, I could simply carry my motorcycle in the bed when I moved. I think I did that exactly once. Man, that's a lot of resources spent driving those things around as a passenger car for years and years.
