Not in the bathroom, but I remember some sort of white thing on the kitchen wall in one of the flats we inhabited in 80s rural Germany, with a pilot light in it. I suppose it must have heated the water. Don't know where the gas came from: presumably somewhere else in the agricultural complex (vineyard) of which the residential building was a part.
I remember somebody coming to repair it and asking me for a "Feudel", which apparently means a rag in northern Germany. I had no idea what he wanted and thought he was asking for a bag (Beutel).
