Never heard of bath geysers? In the 50's they were very common in Britain.

That pic looks insane. If the pilot light goes out, and the room is closed, the drain system will fill up with gas through the bath. If the plug is in, the bath will be full of gas, and someone walking into the bathroom smoking will be an explosion hazard.

The 50's were a long time ago. I have never seen a setup like that, though I have seen electric systems in bathrooms, both small on-demand shower units and tank systems.

The were put in from the 30's to the 60's. The pilot flame was protected and if it went out the gas supply was cut automatically.
