And he got the money he wanted. The 'round earthers' would have paid for a plane ticket or a weather balloon and a camera at most. He wanted to fly a DIY rocket so his research was appropriate to that goal.
Does he reveal what research he did? Given he managed to build a launch system and a capsule that didn't quite kill him the first time he must have done some research into that. Not enough to realise that acceleration hurts though.
I think his real goal is to win a Darwin Award.
