Not really home improvement, but a domestic tip:
We bought a gigantic box of powdered laundry detergent recently. By far, the lowest price per load of laundry.
The problem lay in the wash temperature. We only wash in cold water, and the cold water was clumping the detergent powder in the detergent dispensing thing on our front loading washing machine. Here's the tip:
I used a small glass jar to dissolve a single dose of that powdered detergent. Then, just pour it into the drum when you load the clothes. Works perfectly, no clumps of undissolved detergent powder.
