André Pevin, composer, classical musician, and also an accomplished jazz musician who spent some of his career as an orchestral conductor, has died a few days short of his 90th birthday, on 28/02/2019.

Anne-Sophie Mutter provides a look back at his career here.

Best known here in the UK for his appearance on The Morecambe & Wise Show, where he wasn't afraid to be the butt of their jokes. He composed the soundtracks for 50 movies, and actually won an Oscar for best soundtrack for his contributions to My Fair Lady (there's one to toss into your Trivial Pursuit question list!). Despite "officially" retiring as a composer of soundtracks for MGM in the 1960s, he continued to work in this field, providing music for Rollerball as his last major soundtrack project.

It's probably ironic that more of his work will become known after his death, than during his life. His career from the late 1960s onwards, the Morecambe & Wise sketch notwithstanding, can probably be described best as "prodigious but not conspicuous". Those in the know will probably have an abundance of Previn anecdotes to deliver, and I expect Orpheus may turn up here and start delivering some of those anecdotes. :)
