And to your Q, my answer is:
It's a 50/50 chance: On one hand, the government would (normally) be terrified of actually doing what they have long been accusing fascist governments-and-never-a-free-democratic-government of doing, and actually stifling the free press (so long as NYT publicizes an attack on their Leaks system as an attack on free expression):
After all, this IS the NY times, and it would turn a lot of heads.
On the other hand, the US government isn't shy about stepping out of character and behave in the most tyrannical manner to hound Wikileaks- if they're willing to go that far, I doubt they'd worry about letting their facade fall a little further..
