An American tourist who travelled to Ireland to reconnect with her Catholic roots has snapped what she believes to be an image of the face of Jesus Christ in the Cliffs of Moher.

Sandra Clifford, 42, was spellbound as the "divine apparition" appeared in a patch of lighter rock in the cliff face at the popular County Clare tourist site earlier this month.

The pilot from San Francisco snapped the photo with her digital camera on a rainy day on 4 November, which she described as "a day of rainbows".

"To me it was Jesus Christ straight away," Clifford told website Irish Central late last week.

"I am a pilot, so I am always skeptical of what I see, that is why I started grabbing people and asking them what they saw."

Clifford, a practicing Catholic, is not the only one who has been struck by the image's likeness to the almighty.
