I cannot equate that with 'poor in spirit' in the context of the Sermon on the Mount. It seems a pretty drastic state of mind to be in so that one can reach the 'Kingdom of Heaven' - whatever that is!
As for what prompted the question, well, perhaps later, after a few more theists have 'put their oar in'...
