It has to be said that books actually don't burn that well. They'll char a bit on the outside but there's very little air that gets through to oxidize the paper in the middle.
Not having attended any book burnings my experience here is admittedly limited, but my wife once left a cookbook on top of a gas hob for several minutes and yeah, not much damage was done to it.
