We now live in a world of von Neumann devices.

It is normally said that computers are based on the von Neumann architecture but in actuallity it is rarely mentioned. You can find thousands of computer claiming to explain the technology but do not mention the term even when the occasionally do a good job of explaining it. I worked for IBM for a number of years. IBM hired John von Neumann as a consultant in 1951. I never heard of him while I was at the company and even though I was trained to repair a number of computer models they never did a good job of explaining how computers worked. I had to build my own and study the diagrams to comprehend them.

This is the best, short explanation I have seen:

See How a CPU Works

But it does not mention John von Neumann

The ENIAC and UNIVAC isn't emphasized as much as it should be but now that this technology is everywhere it should be better explained to all children.
