I called a friend (ex-student) who was a Theravada Buddhist monk for 25 years to ask him about this and he said he's never heard anything like it. The only thing he could think of was of a suggestion of some kind of spiritual beings existing beyond the expanse of the world, but these aren't physical beings and they don't exist either on a planet, or really even in this universe/plane of existence.

Now I definitely want some citations!
