Context is important. If the quote is from a scientific setting it is correct usage, if you are using the word in a theist/atheist setting, then the context is religious belief and that is exactly where the incorrect usage of the word is a problem, because it reinforces the idea that theory is just an easy word for hypothesis, or idea, and a scientific theory is no more than that.
