In everyday language it is fine, but since this is intended for an audience which has a particular agenda for the misuse of the word, it would be inappropriate to perpetuate that here.
I don't see a problem with 'theory' being used. Actual scientific theories can be proven wrong. If new evidence contradicts an established theory then we shouldn't resist re-examining what we thought was true simply because it's a theory.
