well, even before napoleon came up and reestablished religion as an institution, an endeavour that will culminate in his signing a concordate with the pope, even Robespierre had found the usefulness of religion and tried to replace christianity with his aborted "cult of the supreme being" which, if I'm not mistaken, petered out as soon as he was shortened.
