Communism, as it has been practiced by revolutionaries and despots (rather than as Mr Marx envisaged), IS religion. It may not include gods or supernatural beliefs but it has just about everything else that religions have, including narrow mindedness and self righteousness and raising their priesthood above the independent rule of law.
