It was ever thus. Every relationship anyone has ever had has failed, except for the one they're in right now, and sometimes that's debatable. The difference is it's not frowned upon to do sex with people you're not married to now, and it's easier to walk away from a relationship as opposed to a marriage...and it's now much easier to walk away from a marriage too.
Incidentally, I just meant that rather than '1 bird each', you could have phrased it '1 partner each', to make it more inclusive.
