Two reasons: go back only a few generations, and you've got one fuck of a lot of ancestors; and the propensity to ally oneself with the biggest swinging dick in your ancestry.
Oh, and the fact that the rich cunts of history have tended to have the most descendents...
# of ancestors counting back through generations:
2 4 8 16 32 64 128 256 512 1024 2048 etc. At some point, some of them have to be pretty fucking awesome, for a given value of awesome.
Incidentally, I'm supposedly descended from both clans Stewart and Gregor, according to family lore - which is interesting, given the historical antipathy between them. However my surname, Rogers, comes from the Germanic meaning 'famous spear', so it may be that at least one of my male ancestors was either very good at killing things with a pointy stick or a bit of a notorious lothario.
