They did the same thing with the Jason Bourne books following the success of the films. Robert Ludlum was too dead to write any new books so Eric van Lustbader stepped in.
James Bond books have had guest authors for awhile too. So long as they don't change the main character that was so popular as to keep going for the fanbase, it's not so bad really.
