Although probably the best known, the Feline/Murine cartoon antagonists are not the original Tom and Jerry.
The originals were a pair of Regency gents in a book by Pierce Egan. Their adventures in London, often scandalous and salacious, were a bestseller in their day and their habit of overturning constable's sentry boxes (with the constable inside) became a common prank for pissed up fellows out on the town. The picture of London nightlife of the early 19th century is an eyeopener.
It's the kind of thing the subsequent Victorians heartily disapproved of...hypocrites that they were. ;)

I still love the cartoons. One that I still remember with fondness is the 'Mouse in Manhattan' episode where Jerry runs away to the bright lights of the big city.
