I think they're trying too hard now to appear relevant and 'with-it'. They shoehorn new technology into episodes, not for jokes but just, it seems, for the purposes of saying "Look kids! We can haz I-Pods!! We haz INTERWEBZ!" in the manner of your slightly embarrassing uncle suddenly wearing a chain on his low-slung jeans.
I mean, sure it had to progress, and maybe I'm being too nostalgic, but the Simpsons was funnier when set in an early 90s world.
