It might be an ongoing phenomenon, changing regularly, but just now discovered. If so, the next few years will show further changes.
Occurs to me to wonder if there is a slight discrepancy between rotation time between crust and core of the planet. Perhaps they oscillate - the core going a little faster at first, and then the crust catching up, followed by the reverse. etc. If so, it implies an active geology.
Venus, of course, is tide locked - with the same side facing the sun all the time. But maybe there is a little oscillation there?
