According the Book of Detritus, Chapter 1 Verses 3-5:
3. And on the first day, the Lord created the world. And it was yet without colour or soft furnishings.
4. So the Lord passed over the waters of the deep, even unto his shed, to find some white paint. For the Lord liketh white - it being clean and all that.
5. But he found that the white paint had gone, for only recently had he used it upon his kitchen ceiling. And in his wrath, he seized a tin of black paint and hurled it across the heavens. And lo, the heavens were painted black.
