More a case of the ladies selecting the men more carefully. A male with good hydraulics does not need a penis bone, and of course, as well as a dick that can stay up without having a bone, it also means the guy's circulatory system is good to. So, the erect-able penis was an "honest" signal as far as physical and biological fitness was concerned.
Those guys who could only have a boner with a bone tended to die earlier and father fewer offspring. So the penis bone died out in humans, although it was on the way out anyway in our clade.
