I see what you mean about Dune, Vaz, and it's probably true of all space operas (to labour that term still more). That's not what you were talking about, though, when you suggested that I might like to write "hard sci-fi". As I understand that genre, what you do there is ask "what if" something were different from the way it actually is in our normal lives - what if, for example, there were an intelligent ocean, or some siblings could communicate with each other by telepathy - and then write a story that explores what the consequences of that difference would be.

Perhaps I could do that; but I'm more interested in characters, at least at the moment, and the sci-fi setting feels like the frame in which the actual picture is set, or the costumes which the actors wear: important, but not the main thing.

I hope I'm not putting anybody off reading Free Fall! Better to do that now, though, than for them to be disappointed at the end because the book wasn't what they were expecting.
