Well... another of my reading groups asks for thumbnail reviews and this is what I wrote:

This is apparently the first in a series of four; I shan't be reading the others.

There are some admirable elements in the treatment of time and transience; the importance of reading and art; societal attitudes to relationships and expectations of women. I applauded the account of the protagonist's attempts to use the Post Office 'Check and Send' service, which mirrored my own, and the depiction of ugly xenophobia abroad in this country now. But all this was overshadowed, for me, by the self-consciously poetic prose.
