Ah yes, but an equivalent Star Wars sequence (stop-motion machines matted together with live action) wasn't seen until the AT-AT walkers took to surface of Hoth in Empire Strikes Back (1980).
Of course, Cameron owes a lot to Ray Harryhausen, who, in turn owes a lot to Willis O'Brien (King Kong, 1933), who, in turn, owes a lot to Georges Méliès. The French pioneer of visual FX did this in 1898...!
