When it comes to stereoscopy ("3D") these have an advantage over television and cinema screens, which must make use of polarised lenses. Imperfections in the polarisation are revealed as "ghosting" of the 3D image (faint blurring and double-imaging).
There's no such ghosting when it comes to the head-mounted displays, because the left-eye and right-eye views are projected straight into each eye respectively, eliminating the need for polarised lenses.
Essentially, the head-mounted displays are high-tech video versions of the old View-MasterTM toys that delivered flawless (albeit completely still) '3D' as far back as the 1960s...
The future looks exciting.
(Just a goddam pity my eyes are so poor... myopia, astigmatism and, recently, onset of presbyopia as well).
