Using the apps on my TV, PS4 and phone are pretty awful. Their categories are limited and poorly defined, the apps push "Because you watched" along with other categories more than actual genres and when you get into it the genres seem to only show the same old shit across multiple genres. Does using the website to browse give greater variety and ease of use
Mostly it's to pretend to have more content than they actually have and maybe tweak your interest. They will use alternative splash screens as well.
Netflix is by no means the worst. Amazon Prime is a horror to navigate. At least some are also providing links to the reviews.
