Over the past few days I have been punishing myself with some of the darkest, weirdest, least accessible metal albums of all time. Lots of bands have surprised me in the past when, after repeated listens, the wall of incomprehensible noise resolved itself into music I could happily listen to. After finally breaking the last taboo - black metal - I figured I could handle pretty much anything a metal band could throw at me, with enough patience and concentration of course.

First up is the most melodic song (the most) from Gorguts' Obscura:

After like 5-10 listens you get desensitized to the dissonence and begin to appreciate the songwriting. Only then is it time to assess the album on its own merits. (I thought it was alright)

Back here I posted a couple of incredibly brutal bands, Anaal Nathrakh and Deathspell Omega. I thought I'd found the edge of extreme metal, but I was wrong. These two could be considered their respective evil cousins:

It seems kind of useless to point out that these are the most accessible songs of theirs I could find....
