Quite right. In fact Elgar was considered a great composer in Europe before he was in the UK. And a wonderful composer he was. I don't know if you know Sospiri (means "sigh") composed on the eve of WW1. Short, 5-6 mins, and startling beautiful. It has that same pathos you find in Mahler (linking to..LOL).
