On the whole, your chances of fixing it with just a soldering iron would be pretty slim too. It's a job that really needs a professional re-flow station, and even then there's a good chance of the RROD re-occurring as it wouldn't change the underlying problem that caused the machines to overheat.
The proper fix, which you'd have got with an official repair, was to swap out the motherboard for a re-designed one that ran cooler.
