It's basically a store-front where you can buy games, as well as a copy protection, multiplayer matchmaking and chat programme, all rolled into one. You have an account there, like you would here, and every game you buy there is tied to that account. Exactly the kind of stuff you'd think the discerning consumer would hate, but Steam made a reputation for having regular sale events where games new and old go dirt cheap.

Steam sales remind me of Reggie Perrin's Grot enterprise. Sell useless shite to people who don't really want it and will never use it but oh have they bought said rubbish at a bargain price. ;-)
