Supermarkets/newsagents do not sell their own scratchcards - they make a profit from selling them.

Merchants sell stuff at zero net or even at a loss to draw customers who might buy more profitable items. I imagine there are plenty of folks who go in to buy a scratchcard and suddenly realize they need to lay in some more booze.

These are people not likely to be very good at estimating the odds of a win. I could dream of hitting a lotto jackpot, but I have too many more interesting things to think about than what I would do with my millions. I could always travel, but then I'd have the AGW hawks on my tail all the time. Thank fuck the odds are only one in a few billions.

Your main task is figuring out how to keep busy until you croak. Whatever floats your boat, my friend, but try to reduce your carbon footprint.
